The Hong Kong Election Commission today voted Carrie Lam as the new chief executive for the special administrative area.

Carrie Lam has been nominated by 1,1094 electoral committees, representing more than 7 million voters in Hong Kong, with 777 votes cast. A total of 1,163 valid votes have been cast.

Mrs. Carrie Lam. (Photo: Time) As a former civil servant, Lam overcame rival former financial officer John Tsang, and Woo Kwok-hing, a retired judge, to become the first female leader in Hong Kong. The new leader of Hong Kong will be sworn in on July 1. Security at the voting center has been tightened in the context of protests. About 300 demonstrators clashed outside the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center.

Hong Kong has been handed over to China since 1997.
